The principal port for Shetland, Lerwick is an integral component in the islands' economic infrastructure. At the crossroads of the North Sea and the North-east Atlantic, it is also Britain's most northerly commercial port.

In addition to Sullom Voe the Shetland Islands Council, as Harbour Authority, has responsibility for the operation of a number of smaller ports and piers located around the islands.
